Possably a broken input shaft?
Possably a broken input shaft?
What would be the easiest way to tell if you have a broken input shaft besides pulling the trans? My car has no forward gear, but reverse works just fine. If I down shift the car to 1st gear it will attemp to go in to gear but will still be in nutral. The tranny fluid is as close to perfect, in color, as it can be. Just want to consider every possability before getting a new trans.
Re: Possably a broken input shaft?
the input shaft is connected to the clutch disc, if you can move the car in reverse, the input shaft is fine, see if you can start the car in any other gear, if you can, then you probably have a messed up synchro
Re: Possably a broken input shaft?
At first if I put the gear selector in 2nd gear it would go in to gear and I could manually up shift the car, but if I more than moderately accelerated the car would slip out of gear. Then oneday I just stabbed the gas in my driveway and I felt something "let go" and it's had no forward gear since then.

i didnt read your sig in my last post and i realize now its an automatic, not a stick, so disregard my last message
if i could find my powerflow chart for the 4l60e i would be able to help you figure out which friction material is slipping, but i dont know so you'r better off asking cpt, but then even if you found out which friction material is slipping, your gonna need a rebuild anyway

Re: Possably a broken input shaft?
You have lost the forward clutch, possibly the forward clutch piston cracked (early 4L60E's used the aluminum forward piston) you can replace the forward & overrun with the molded rubber steel pistons. Depending on what you want to do during the rebuild, you could do some upgrades here. If I can be of help, let me know?
