posi unit
posi unit
I've got 3:23 gears in my 95 3.4l and when I do my motor swap I'm going to get a posi unit. I'm wondering what posi units I can use- does it have to be out of another car with the same gears or can I can I use one out other camaros with different gears? I have no experience with rearends so this may be a stupid question but any help would be great.
The only stupid question is an unasked one.
You can use any posi unit that came out of a 7.5/7.625" 10 bolt. The gear ratio does not matter (as long as it fits the posi). If you get a different ratio, though, the speedometer and odometer will read different.
If you have the money/luck get a zexel torsen from a 99'-02 Z28/SS/Trans Am/WS6

The OEM 10-bolt posi units are the clutch-cone design built by Auburn. The clutch-cones often wear out around 80K miles and can't be rebuilt. So be careful when buying a used posi unit (it may not have much, or any life remaining).
Auburn now makes a Pro-Series posi for the GM 10-bolts with a 2 year exchange program. Something to consider over buying a used part with potential problems. Also, the Pro-Series should be a performance upgrade.

Jack up the rear end and turn one wheel. If the other wheel turns the same direction you've passed stage one of the test. If it turns the other direction then you know your posi is dead. Beyond that You can take a high speed turn and if the inner wheel chirps your posi is dead. Mine has 170k miles on the original posi and is still working....
THanks man! Also, its reassuring to know that yours is still working. I bought my car with high mileage on it, but the prev. owner took good car of his car (or maybe im just lucky??) -> 180k km's on the original opti.
