Could be a caliper hanging up. Drive for awhile and get out and carefully feel the rims. If one is significantly warmer than others odds are the caliper is dragging on that wheel.
A problem with the gears typically sounds like a humming or drone type sound that changes pitch in relation to speed...hope that helps a little-

it's a horrific sound i'm afraid to drive it , i'm scared if it is the rear end it might be salvageable .....so u think it could be my brakes? it does kind of change sound at speed but it's a GRIND no whinning or moaning like my jeep did when the rear went out of it.. also when i come to an almost stop some of it sounds like the brakes...somewhat...damn i just bought this car i really hope it aint the rear end....do they grind like this when they're bad?. i mean it's a loud grind guys, very very noticable.. i don't know how to check the fluid or anythign and my mechanic isn't open til monday, should i drive it and see if my caliper is sticking???
Re: please help rear end grind
Any way you can jack up the rear end on jack-stands, chock the front wheels and have someone put it in drive or 1st and let the wheels turn and see if you can locate the noise a little better. Obviously don't get under the car or face the car into your house or garage...just a suggestion maybe it will help.
Re: please help rear end grind
Look at the brake pads and see if they are worn down to nothing. If you have metal on metal, its going to grind real loud when you apply the brakes. Obvious first step would be to check the brakes. If you find no lining on the pads, and large gouges in the rotors, you have found your problem.
Re: please help rear end grind
I am having the same problem. Noise in the rear when brakes applied. Mine is more like a thumping noise rather than grinding that lasts as long as the brakes are applied.
Just for information to the thread and not in any means to hijack it, I have new rotors and pads installed on the back and front.
The car is now raised on the back and will be performing a check later today.
One thing I did not do was to check the inside of the rims for potential interference with the calipers or carrier. Good info to the one who posted that.
Does anyone know if there are spacers required with the factory wheels?
I realize this post is old so I wonder if the OP made any progress. I will post updates on what I find in my case which could potentially help the OP>

Jim

Re: please help rear end grind
As an update this afternoon I set the car to run while the rear was off the ground. The wheels were turning and I noticed the passenger's side rear wheel wobbling as if it was not true. I removed the wheel and noticed that the axle seems to be bent. The car has a small hit on the body on that side so it could be related.
I believe that this is the problem with my car. I will get a new axle and install and will post an update.
regards,
Jim
