Play in Trans output shaft.

I was under my car yesterday investigating the occsional "clunks" I start to trie and shake the driveshaft and it seemed to make a metal on metal "ding" noise and I looked toward the area where the shinny metal part comes out of the trans and hookes up to the U-joint and noticed that it had play (vertically) (i.e it moved up and down) a little which caused this noise. Seems like ths is my problem, am I in for a rebuild? Can this be fixed w/ out a rebuild? Im not gona have it rebuilt cuz the trans works pretty good even w/ the hard shifts on cold start but I am just wondering. It seems like maby the output shaft could be shimed in a way that it wouldnt be able to move up and down. (take into mind it doesnt move drasticlly, maby like 1/4 of cm)

The 700r4 in my truck has play in the output shaft. I was told that a small amount of play was normal.

Mine (4L60E) does the same thing and I just had it built to handle 700fwhp last year...Builder told me it was normal...

Re: Play in Trans output shaft.

Ok well I guess thats good hten, but I still cant figure out where this is coming from. When putting it in "D" I get a nice jolt and a loud noise like metal bending/a banging noise. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are pretty hard especially on cold start, after highway driving the shifts are a little smoother. Sometimes It will give a banging noise when shifting from 1-2 or 2-3, usually only on part throttle, on 1/2 - full throttle its fine.
