Pinion & Ring Gear setup?
Pinion & Ring Gear setup?
I just finished installation of new 3.54 gears in my DANA36.
What I noticed was gear noise when rotating the pinion in the load direction; rotating in the coast direction is very quiet.
Before I go on installing the rear end in my vette, I would like to know if this is normal.
Pinion preload is okay, backlash is at minimum and the pattern of the drive side is not as good as the coast side, but still okay.
I know there are not too many people out there installing gears themselves, but hopefully someone can help.
Thanks
Arnold

That should help you a little. If your already hearing noise and haven't installed it yet, someting is defintely wrong. Did you use a crush sleeve or switch to a soild "shimable" spacer to set your pinion preload. Also a handy little tip. Take your old pressed on pinion bearing, and hone out the center just enough that it is a very tight slip fit. That way you can play with the pinion depth a lot easier. You'll want to ignore the coast side pattern and try and get the drive side pattern perfect. the caost pattern should end up just right once you get the drive side pattern in line. Measured pinion depth is mearly a suggestion. Due to case imperfections and tolerances, you should alway go by the pattern. The pattern can also be hard to read so be sure to rotate it several times to make sure you got good contact. Its also a good idea to apply a small amount of drag but holding on to the diff while spining the assembly by the pinion, this will yeild the best pattern.
Check out the Yukon Gear instruction sheet in the link above. It has a lot of useful information.
You may also want to make sure that everything is extremely clean. Are you sure you didn't get some dirt in a bearing which could be makeing the noise.
Other than that I don't know what could make a noise at such a low rpm.

I have all the instruction manuals and everything is set at the right specifications. The only thing trouble is, that when rotating in one direction there is no noise, rotating in the opposite direction (drive) there is a noticeable gear noise. I don't think that it is the pattern, it's just that the drive side runs rougher.
Have you checked for burs on the gears, any odd diformaties on the gears...My only other suggestion is to send that set back and get a replacement set. As long as you haven't run them in the car you should be able to exchange them.
