Pinion Bearing

How in the heck do you get this thing out. I got the pinion seal out and am going to replace the seal and the bearing. I have been trying to get that bearing out for a few hours last night and have been trying for a couple of hours so far tonight. It should come out from the front, right??? Or does the pinion have to come out from the back?? If that's that case, how big of a job is that???? Thanks for anybod that can help. I got to get this car on the road by tommorrow night. It is a daily driver. By the way, it's a 95 Z28, drivetrain is stock.

Re: Pinion Bearing

Drive the pinion out from the front of the car, that will remove the pinion and inner bearing, then the other bearing should fall out the front side...use a brass punch to keep from damaging the pinion

Re: Pinion Bearing

The pinion will only come out one way...You have to pull the cover, main caps, and diff w/ ring gear to take the pinion out, I assumed you had already done that.

I have pulled the main cover and drained the fluid. And I got the part that the drive shaft connects to off. The front pinion seal is off too. I haven't gotten anything as far as the diff, or anything in that part off. What is the proper order of things to take out??? When I take the stuff out, what things should I be aware of putting it back together. I took the axles out a few days ago changing out the axle bearings and seals. That was a piece of cake. I've never messed with anything with the ring gear and such. Thanks for all your help!!!

Re: Pinion Bearing

You need to pull the c-clips, they retain the axles in the carrier.
Then mark the caps for side and top/bottom, remove them.
Pull the carrier out of the case, make sure you don't hit the ABS sensor(or remove it) Keep shims in order from which side they came out of(VERY IMPORTANT)
knock the pinon out of the case and make sure you put any shims back under the bearing if there were any once you remove it. (sets pinion contact on ring gear) press new inner bearing on pinon.
Drive old races out of case and install new ones.

Reassemble with original shims in correct positions and torque to specs.

Man, thanks for all your help!!! I'm sure this is a dumb question but, what are the "races"?? Where are they in relation to the bearings??

Bearing rides against it...tapered and sits over the rollers.

Re: Pinion Bearing

If you do something wrong you can really mess up the rearend, there was a page I saw on specifically the 10 bolt rebuild, maybe someone can post it, all I could find was R&P setup instructions.

Remember you need to use a new crush sleeve.

Re: Pinion Bearing

Thanks again!!! I followed to link and it went very smoothly. It was much easier than I thought it would be. I just went in and replaced all the bearings and races so I didn't get into the diff. It all went great, I worked on it all day between rain showers. All I got to do now is fill the rear end up with fluid, put the driveshaft back in, and put the tires back on. I'm also changing out the transmission mount too while I got it up on stands. Thanks once again for all your help!!!!

Good deal! There's not much you can't do on your own car with some good instructions and mechanical ability.
