I was just wondering how tough the 6 speeds was in the Z28's..i am in process of buying one that has been tremedously ripped on...i am replacing the slave and clutch, do you think that it will continue to live? what will be the next to go? how much are rebuilds on these trannys?

I'd try my best to avoid an abused transmission. Although the T56 is tough, that doesn't mean it wont need rebuilt if "ripped-on".

depends on the year, i'm not exactly sure on what year it was but i think the warner t-56 was sold around 1996 and the quality went to crap. I believe the pre 96's were rated at 450 ft-lbs and the later are 350 ft-lbs.

Re: How tough is the T56?

The T56 stands up well to HP and torque. I have 148k on my original T56 and the cars been heavily modified for the last 60K miles. I have 593 rwhp, 596 ft-lb torque. It's speed shifting and clutch dumps at 5K with sticky tires, sticky clutch and high HP that can kill them. Speed shifting like to take out 3rd gear fork; the clutch dumps can twist the splines in the tailshaft.

Re: How tough is the T56?

the t-56 holds up to a lot of power. I'd stay away from high power holeshots, but i've seen a lot of guys running 400-500rwhp on a stock t-56. not pure racing or anything, but everyday street cars that guys get on all the time for fun. The worst thing you can do is to buy a car that has been purely abused. There's nothing wrong with a car that has been taken to the limits, but abused is another thing. you can flogg an f-body all day at the road course and come home with all parts in good shape if you drive it professionally. But we all know of the type that powershift frequently, grind gears, spin clutches, try holeshots, redline clutch dumps, jumping over a bridge trying to be like the F&F, etc. thats what breaks cars and parts. Just try and stay away from the kid who has a light up shift ****, a 150 shot and some cheeto crumbs in the back seat. lol you get the point.
typical abuse wear items on a t-56= synchronizers, shift forks and tabs, throwout bearing, and clutch/pressure plate assy. the gears themselves are much harder to break. usually the synchronizers and blocking rings will fade first, depending on the driver.

Re: How tough is the T56?

ok, thanks for the info, i appreciate the posts...is there any way to check the synchro's without hooking the tranny up? i dont think u can...but anyways, i will check that tailshaft and make sure it is ok...if i were to buy this tranny, he told me that he has a second one he would give to me, but it needs rebuilt because the synchros are out of it. would any of you be interested in buying a junk t56? thanks

450ft-lb is the rating and they didn't drop in rating after 96
