performabuilt 4l60e, thud in the tail

94 camaro z28 with performabuilt 4l60e level 2. i thought i had a bad ujoint until i took the driveline out and it was fine. i found out the thud that i was getting when it shifts and when giving it a tiny bit of gas. i looked at the shaft in the trany that driveshaft slides into. it wiggles and when pushing it up i hear that thud. what would cause this and how to fix?

ok there will be slight play up and down but if you said that you are hearing a thud, thats not right so from what i can picture in my head of what that tranny looks like you are looking at the bearing that supports the output shaft and that bearing is a cooper bearing and needs to be pressed in and i thinck your going to have to take the tranny apart i hope that helps

Actually while there is a bushing in the rear of the case it offers little support for the shaft its acts more as a guide. The bushing in the tail housing is what actually supports the output shaft and yoke limiting up/down and side to side motion. If this is worn you would need to replace both the tail housing bushing (unbolts with 4 bolts from the trans) and likley the driveshaft yoke as generally if one os bad so is the other. The tail shaft itself without the yoke in it will move a good bit up and down.

Might have been a better idea to continue the original thread, rather than starting a new one.

Just pull the tail housing off and take it to a local tranny shop and have them install it. I had to do the same thing,I think it cost me like 40 bucks

what he said is correct and no you do not have to remove the trans.
