Opinions on Converter
Hi Everyone,
I dont really post here often but periodically log in to read all the great info posted on this site.
I was wondering what the benefits of installing a 2800-3000 Converter would be in my car? I have been saving for a 355 or 383 set-up but I am not quite there yet and wanted to do something over the winter . I was considering a CPT tranny rebuild and a converter since I would need to upgrade these parts anyway when I am ready for the motor.
The engine will not be anything crazy as I need excellent drivability and I need the car to pass NY emissions. Would probably go with a VRE bottom end and Lingenfelter Heads and Cam (211/219). So I thought the stall speeds stated above would be good for a street car with this kind of powerband. I dont race at all, just want a really fun weekend car.
I have never driven a car with a performance converter. What is it like? Does it work well with my existing mods? It might be another year before I can afford my engine. Sorry if I sound ignorant with respect to this....Thanks in advance!

I think you will like a good converter with a stall in the 2800-3000rpm range. It will really wake the car up. It should not effect emissions. You will see the gas mileage drop in stop and go type driving. Forget about first gear traction with street tires though.

Thanks Guys. Is it true that the Vig converters stall a little higher? I beleive CPT sells ProTorque, does anybody have any feedback on that brand?
What do you think is the right converter for the street in the 2800 range. Brand wise. Without considering money.
By the way great sticky Rich! I read through it and now have a pretty good understanding of what I'm looking for in a converter.

There is always a bit of difficulty in exactly predcitng stall speed. Except for very demanding racing applications, it isn't terribly important. In any case, you can't really stall a converter w/o a transbrake anyway. The rated stall speed, with all the variables involved, is always a bit of a WAG anyway. That said, as other people have posted, a GOOD converter is key here. My own experience is more with race converters, so I will leave it to others to give a brand recommendation. But I can say that a good v. a crappy converter is night and day and to some extent, you get what you pay for. FWIW, the race converters I endorse are Coan, Neal Chance, and ATI. I do think that both Coan and ATI make lockup street converters, so you might consider them.

Rich whats your opinion of west coast converters for the car in my sig? I'm looking at either getting a better/bigger stall or some 390 or so gears. Lots of street time 4K a year, but I want to be quick at the track.
I have heard of them but have no direct experience.
