Ok, I need to make some plans for my converter install..

In another thread... thats dead now... i was told 01-02 models need computer work to adjust to a stall converter properly...

I'm probably going to end up doing this myself with a friend or two in connecticut (i've done it before, but still am not looking forward to it, mainly because of the cooler lines and top 2 block bolts)

I'll have a shop install the transmission cooler for me.

ANYWAYS, what I need to know... what exactly do i need done to my computer? and what does the place that does it need? (someone mentioned you have to have a dyno or something )

I need to know specifically what i need and what to ask for so i can find a place that can do it, and make all the arrangements so i can get it tuned the same day/next day after the install.

I apreciate it

Jared

It has been a while since I have read about this, but I believe the thing those years need done is either removal, or lessening of the Torque Managment program in the PCM.. I think if the shop had tuning software for the LS1 then it should be good, I think when someone mentioned the dyno it was to see the effects of the Torque Managment, and if their adjustment of the settings in the PCM were geting it done.

I believe if you have HP tuner or something similar then you can probably do it yourself or at least get a good tuner to do it for you..

Mine is a 95 so to be honest I read those threads just to get a little more knowledge, I have never done it myself.. But yes I think this is all that needs to be done that is different then installing a converter in other years.. That is with the exception of OBD-I cars may need other computer tweaks if the stalll speed is above 3K.

Re: Ok, I need to make some plans for my converter install..

After my TC install I experienced some "idle hunting" at slow speeds when coming to a stoplight/in parking lots - sometimes the car would even die. I got an email tune from RWTD - he increased my in gear idle about 150 RPM, shift firmness (no shift kit), and completely deleted TM. I played with my shift points a little on my own but didn't see much difference so I'm running the stock settings now, can't afford dyno tuning - but that's the way to go. I'd wait a few days before getting it tuned to allow the PCM to do some relearning first. Just my experience, hope this helps...

ok.. an e-mail tune

how does that work?

what will I need? like as far as hardware and stuff to get it into my pcm?

I already had a Predator, so that's the route I went for a tune. If you're going to get a dyno tune you shouldn't need to bring anything but your car - they'll have the necessary hardware/software to make you a tune.

i dunno if i wanna spend the money on a dyno tune tho...

how much of a gain will it get me hp wise... not having to do with the adjustments for the stall converter?

can a basically stock engine car gain any decent hp from a dyno tune?

if not... i'd rather just get the cheapest tune possible to make my stall work the best way it can
