alumn flywheel ....bad idle?

why would a lightweight alum flywheel cause a bad idle??

did some searching and saw this listed several times?

not sure why.

i understand it can be a pain during stop and go...

:blah: i guess i'll find out...alum fw is going in this weekend with a Spec 4

Wow, I never thought of that before, but I guess the steel one can act as a dampener of sorts. It's momentum will soften any misses or inconsistencies the engine produces, while the aluminum one, with it's fractional weight, will get jerked around more. If you took the flywheel off it would probably make it even worse. I'm sure a lot of it could probably be solved by finding out why the engine isn't running smoothly, but no engine runs perfect, so a small amount of instability might be unavoidable.

An al flywheel is not light enough to cause a bad idle. Your engine will seem to have less torque at idle because the engine has less stored rotating enregy, thus the differnet throttle level needed for initall clutch engagement, but this does not mean your idle is bad. I wouldn't call it a pain at all either, its just a small difference that you might need to get used to for a couple days. The friction material of the clutch you pick is going to have just as big of an effect on your drivability.
