no reverse

A buddy of mine has a '60E in his truck and he lost reverse. when I asked if the check engine light was on he said it's been on for a few years. I haven't been to the truck to scan for codes yet but he told me this: Shifts through al forward gears when selector is in O/D. Will not go into manual 1st or second, he wasn't sure about D but he thinks it works, no reverse at all. Any ideas?

No reverse is a purley mechanical issue. (reverse input drum/low reverse clutch set) If he also didnt have second or 4th could be the sunshell spripped which will also cause a no reverse, But in all cases trans is gotta come out be replaced or rebuilt. Afraid theres no code for that.

could the manual valve be hung up or something? It's mechanically linked to the shift selector correct? Perhaps the linkage fell off? Just thinking out loud. I'm guessing I will be pulling the pan off soon and will know more then.

I think if the manaul linkage was off you would always be stuck in one particular gear position.
