no drive gears only reverse??
I've got a 94 z28 with a 4l60e and I just rebuilt the engine. After I got it running it wouldn't go into reverse. It would go threw all 4 gears in drive but no reverse. Then one day I said the hell with it imma drive it annyway so me and my cousin took turns drivin it up and down the street. Before I parked it, it was grinding alil. Later that day I started it and it grinded alil more then the reverse worked. Now the drive is not engaging it acts like its in neutral when I put it in any of the 4 gear positions. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe the torque converter but don't wanna buy one and it still do the same thing???

Well its not grinding any more it just acts like its in neutral. When I try to put it in any forward drive gear. And would I need a tranny rebuild to fix that, what you sayed it was?? Thanks for the reply also...

Re: no drive gears only reverse??
Once it tears all the teeth off the sun gear it will stop making noise. Yes, it's time for a rebuild. My guess is that if you drop the pan, it will be full of metal.

Re: no drive gears only reverse??
I pulled the pan and filter off earlier, there was no O ring on the filter neck. I found a big black rubber gromet laying in the pan, it looks new like someone left it in there before? There was a little sludge stuck on the magnet on the pan. Could that metal sludge just be from normal wear? Because if I grinded a gear I would think there should be chunks in the pan not dust..

Re: no drive gears only reverse??
The 4L60E uses a metal clad seal that presses into the pump. It doesn't use an o-ring. If you don't see any large metal chunks, you most likely don't have a bad planetary. With that in mind, there are several other reasons for not having forward. The early 4L60Es had aluminum forward pistons that were notorious for cracking. When they crack, the fluid leaks through the crack instead of applying the piston. No piston apply means no forward clutch apply. No forward clutch apply means no forward. The other possibility is forward clutch failure. Try pulling the shifter into the manual 2nd position. If it moves forward in manual 1st or 2nd, but not manual 3rd or O/D then it's your forward sprag. If the reverse input oir low/reverse clutch is burnt to the point that it's locked on, you won't have forward either.
