Check for misassembled valve behind the solenoid, Check the the servo is assembled corectly and is shimmed there are not to many ,With the car in neutral wheels raised car not running you should be able to turn the drive shaft in both directions, One will have slightly more resistance than the other. Also if you did the one spring on top and one under the 2nd accumulator and the accumulator was plastic you may have cracked it this can cause modulated line to leak through and apply the band also . Another possibility is the accum piston seal is damaged, Hope this helps some and good luck ,

Does it have 4th gear? A non operating "A" solenoid will cause a no 1st and 4th condition. As already stated, he could have misinstalled the 1-2 shift valve. Did he install a NEW shift solenoid? Check the connector where the solenoid plugs in.
If he installed those goofy gold spacers in the servo, then the band may be too tight, and causing it to not release. As a side note, those spacers (as most of the TG kit) help burn up the band. If the servo is staying applied for any other reason, it'll also cause a no 1st condition.
Are you sure it's just no 1st? It may be trying to take off in 3rd (limp mode). This will still allow a MANUAL 2-3 upshift, but you won't have 2nd, in D range.
