New 3:73's = whine
New 3:73's = whine
Got my new Motive 3:73's installed, took 2 weeks at the speed shop. He said they had it apart 3 times to get it just right. Drove it home 10 miles, whines when you let off the gas and even steady driving around the 40 to 50 mph mark. I bought Motives as I heard they are supposed to be quiet. I called the shop up and they said they had called Motive and they told them that they have to be broken in and then will quiet down. 30 Minutes then cool and then another 30 minutes of driving should do it. My regular mechanic who doesn't do rears thinks the pinion bearing is not set right and that the first time at the track I might blow the rear. The speed shop swears "the rear is set up 100% right on." Any opinions as I want to take it to the track the first cool day they are open.
If it was set up right, it would not whine. I disagree with what they said about break-in. If they whine now and you keep driving it, they will wear into that pattern and never be able to have the whine adjusted out. Setting up gears can take a lot of trial an error.

+2, i have GM motives in mine with a eaton diff. You cant even tell theres a gear in my car. I also have a alum ds. which helps out. But accel, decel, whatever you cant hear or feel **** from my car.
The install is everything with gear whine. Go back or find somewhere thats knows what they are talking about. They didnt do it properly. They do break in but shouldnt be making all that noise/whine.

Did the break in procedure and they still make the whine. I've put about 200 miles on them. Going to get a 2nd opinion from another shop tomorrow. I just don't want this rear to blow up as I just got laid off from work. Me and 200 other co-workers
Also, if you're that concerned about scattering your rear, it might be wise not to take it to the track.
It is very hard to set a rear end up properly - factory quiet is almost never achieved on the first attempt, if ever. Pretty much, I'd say live with it if you can. I'd like to know how the factory does it - there must be some tricks involved.

Got the 2nd opinion and he advised it won't last. Took it back to the shop, wine getting worse as you can hear it with the windows up when you coast at 50mph. They agreed to replace the gears next tuesday.
