Question Is my M6 trans' days numbered???

Well I hope someone can give me some info on this problem I had with my 93Z. It has the 6speed trany with about 122K mi on it.

The other day I was driving in second gear with a slow acceleration and teh shifter jumped out of gear with a loud clunk like something broke. When I tried to put it back in gear it wouldnt go into any gear at all and teh cluch was really soft. I coasted off the road and came to a complete stop. I sat there for a few minutes trying to think of what could be wrong, then I pushed the cluch back in (this time it felt normal) and tried to put it back in gear. I had no problem getting it back in gear, I tried all 6 with no problem. There wasnt anything visually wrong with it and I havent had a problem in th epast 2 weeks. Today it has been hard to put in reverse but it does go in and the cluch has felt fine.

Has anyone had this problem or know what might be wrong with it?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Is my M6 trans' days numbered???

Mine has done it maybe 2 or 3 times. They were all right after I installed the poly transmounts and Torque arm bushing. They were also while I was turning sharply. Also popping out of second gear, same clunk. My thought is that it is perhaps due to the twist and vibration of driving and turning.

The other thing I have seen: a friend of mine had a really cheap short shifter. I dont know what brand etc. It would actually come in contact with the console and would not allow him to fully put it into gear, and it would also pop out.

Reverse has alwyas been the hardest gear by far to get into. Which is probably a good thing for some.

..Just a few Ideas.

Re: Is my M6 trans' days numbered???

Thanks for the info guys. I guess until it totally stops going into gear I will take it easy on the car. Come to think of it I was driving pretty agresive just before it happened. I have been thinking about swapping out all the mounts in teh drivetrain so this might be the excuse I have been waiting for.

Thanks again and if anyone else has any ideas please feel free to let me know.

from experience, once it starts ackting up. Get it pulled and bring it in before you cost yourself more money. I didnt and my whole trans is now ****ed up bad. If its just a synchro then it wouldnt matter too much but it usually never is just a synchro.
