Motive 2-cut vs. 5-cut gears

I'm installing a set of gears right now. I got some Motive gears with the GM7.5-4.10 part number on the box. How can you tell if they are 2-cut gears or not. Also, I've only been able to find one reference to the pattern difference on a 2-cut set of gears. Anyone have experience setting these up and could you shed some light on this? Does the pattern look different than a 5-cut set? Any example pictures or diagrams? This is important because the 2-cut gears require significantly tighter backlash than the 5-cut gears, and because the one mention I saw of the difference stated that you shouldn't look for a symmetrical pattern on the 2-cuts.

The Motive web site shows my gears as a 41/10 ring gear/pinion gear tooth combination. My gears are a 37/9 combo (4.11). There is no listing for my combination in the 7.5/7.625 section. Does this make a difference in whether they are 2-cut or 5-cut? Motive doesn't list a contact number, and they haven't answered my email.

I also used Motive gears and the 4.11's. These are 5 cut per the discussion I directly had with their support people during my install.

I e-mailed them and they called to follow up with me. Very impressed with their service. In addition, his suggestion was exactly what the shop guys did without knowing Motive's answer.

If you are doing this yourself for the first time, I would suggest getting it set up by a pro.

Well, Motive didn't call me back or email me, but I finally found a number and talked to a tech support person. They said that the 2-cut gears are only for the 8.5" rear. Also, they said that if you order a 4.10 gearset, you might get 41/10 or 37/9 gears depending on which company manufactured them.

Are the pinion depth and backlash number stamped or scribed anywhere on the gears? I used a set of Precision Gears and everything was marked for an easy setup.

Pinion depth is marked. Backlash range is different depending on whether they are 2-cut or 5-cut. I don't have a problem with the settings, I just wanted to confirm which they were.

I didn't know the cut of the gears actually made that big of a difference when setting the backlash.? I had always been told that for street driving backlash is usually set between .007" and .010". If anyone else has any input, i would like to know the answer to this also.

From what I've found, the backlash on a 2-cut gear is set to .003-.006." The directions from Motive for 5-cut gears say to set backlash at .008-.0012." There isn't any overlap between the two specifications so I figured I should confirm which I had.
