moser forgets shims.
Re: moser forgets shims.
Assembly isn't the issue... these are non-c-clip units and simple to put together.
The issue I have is that:
1) You have to press on your own bearings... or pay a shop $25 to do it for you.
2) You need to provide your own brake backing plates (making resale on your 10-bolt harder to pull off).
3) Without the axles installed it can't possibly ship with gear oil in it... and they don't provide it.
4) If you order a 1350 yoke, you need to provide your own conversion u-joint (strange provides one).
5) No solid-pinion bearing spacer
and the BIGGEST issue with Moser rears:
6) You PAY for the damn thing to be assembled... and they WHINE. Why teh HELL DO I PAY OVER 3 G's FOR A UNIT THAT NEEDS TO BE DISSASSEMBLED AND SET UP PROPERLY?!
They cop-out of their inabilty to assemble a decenty unit by slapping on a disclaimer on their instructions page now saying that it's intended to be a high-performance unit and increased gear whine is to be EXPECTED.
Retards.
Wish I bought a Strange... wouldn've been a bunch easier.

A couple of my buddies locally had problems with their Moser rear axles as well. On one WS6 car, the rear spring perches were wrong to the point where the rear of the car sat over one inch higher than before. He had to put in lowering springs to get it back to stock
I'll take a dyno tested fully assembled rear end for 100$ more any day, especially when you add up all the stuff you get with it over the moser, it ends up being a wash on price. Even if the difference is still 50$ at that point, I'd rather have them assemble it, that way if it gets messed up for whatever reason, they'll know it before it leaves the factory, and fix it.BTW, I stopped listening to what you had to say about the moser axle when I saw you were one of their outlets. I'd rather hear what customers have to say about the product as you get a much less biased opinion.

Re: moser forgets shims.
No answer about the shims?
Where do the shims go, behind the brake backing plate?
I thought this may explain the bearing noise I have. Not sure if it's from a bearing or from the brakes, rotors.
The good thing about the moser rearend is strength, it is stronger than the strange rearend. It comes with an eaten posi, supposedly best in the business. The 33 spline axles on this rearend are pretty much indestructable and have a 10 yr warranty. All the brackets on the axle tubes are thick steel and very well made and much stronger than stock. The housing is made of cast nodular iron. As said before it keeps the antilock brakes, something the ford 9" can not do. I was very impressed with this rearend!
Installing the bearings is easy if you have a press. It's not rocket science.

Re: moser forgets shims.
When i bought my 12-bolt Moser, they sent me the shims and I didn't need them per my application, but I saved them for the future. Thank God I did save them, my friend ordered a Moser 9in, and he needed them but Moser forgot to include them with his rearend. He called up and they sent them a couple days later but we needed them immediately, so thank God I saved mine. We are still very happy with both the 9in and 12-bolt Moser rearends!!!!

The "failure" rate appears to be in the range of 25-50%. If that's acceptable quality to you, god save your customers.

Re: moser forgets shims.
Just researching some clutches and noticed this thread is still alive....
Minor correction, "Only some 93-97's require shims" according to moser.
Their instructions definitly imply that all LT1's require the shims though.
I found that it is "only some cars" when i called back a second or third time to find out what the hold up was on my shims. My shims spaced my axles out just far enough that my rotors would occasionally brush the caliper. I had to then shim my calipers out from the caliper bracket to get the right alignment, OR pull the axles out again and take them one by one on my motorcycle to get them pressed apart and back together again
They should;
A) provide better instructions
B) figure out a way to determine when shims are required and when they are not without fully assembling the damn thing.
C) remove their heads from their asses

Moser doesn't promise the rear to work with all stock driveshafts, but seriously who buys a Moser rearend and keeps the stock driveshaft? Does that defeat the purpose of the HD rearend, why have a weak link driveshaft. I know all my customers purchase a Denny's Nitrous ready shaft with their rearend
Is that what Moser told you to say when confronted about the product?

Many people scrape together the $2,000+ to put a Moser under their car, and keep the stock DS temporarily, because they don't have another $400 to dump into a Denny's nitrous ready DS at that particular moment. They shouldn't have to play Russian roulette with their stock DS and tranny tailshafts. When you lay out $2,000 for a moderately high tech product, it is just plain dumb for the manufacturer not to include the instructions that insure it will be installed correctly and perform up to expectations.
Those are "quality" problems, even if you fail to recognize them as such.
Re: moser forgets shims.
WHen i bought my Moser 9" back in 02.. The gear's were setup incorrectly.. Ate itself within 10 miles.. Called them the next day. They sent me out another center section to r&R the bad one.. haven't had a problem since w/ my rear.. Its a p.i.t.a to have issue's like that.. It's very apparant that they have some Quality Control Issue's.. I have and continue to use a stock driveshaft as well as a Spohn HD for track duty.. Stock length and haven't had any neg. effect's from doing so.. While back there was some issue's w/ the strange as well.. ITs a hit or miss thing nowaday's w/ the quantity of part's coming out of these place's.. Its really sad to pay upward's of 2K for a piece only to have some b.s occur mid swing.. but.. Thats why they say some "assembly" req'd.. nothing is a bolt on.. tweak this tweak that..
Re: moser forgets shims.
My buddy did all sorts of damnage to his tranny b/c of the moser issues.
I bought the strange, they have been nothing but helpful with me both via email and the phone. The only complaint i have is that replacement seals/ABS sensor etc are too pricey, but other than that i wouldnt have a bad thing to say about them.
Doing it all over again, it would be strange 12 bolt again.
Oh ya, i still have the stock steel driveshaft with 4.33 gears, and the car gets raced on slicks pretty often. Funny it hasnt failed, hell it doesnt even vibrate too badly, lol.
