moser forgets shims.
moser forgets shims.
I ordered my moser from TT performance.net in NJ. I was happy with their price and ability to answer my questions. They delayed ordering mine untill they had a few orders together to make at once. After the order i had some trouble getting them on the phone.
A couple days later than expected i recieved my rear end from moser. I was dissapointed to find the housing filthy both inside and out. Moser failed to include the 1/8" shims for the axles.
"They are also notorious for forgetting to give you some shims that are required." http://www.fbody.com/cgi-bin/lt1/read.cgi?msgid=170875
As usual, fred was all over that one.
They refused to send them to me overnight. Whats a couple more days riding my bike in the rain........
Overall just a mediocre experince. I'm getting immune to vendors screwing up because of my job...........
Moral of the story, if you have an lt1 make sure they send yoru shims!

Re: moser forgets shims.
don't sweat it. it is a bitch
me and my friend just got done yesterday with a moser 12-bolt install.
there were soooooo many problems.
let me put it this way. it took us about an hour to take out the 4l60e and put in his turbo 400. and it took us about 6 hours to put the rear-end in and make it work, and then we still had problems.
they forgot to give us bolts, SHIMS, and a couple of other things.
we had to custom make ALOT of **** just to wrench some bolts.
the other thing was the shock/spring assembly. we had to cut the brace for the spring placement and make the angle correct again, and then weld it back up.
he also had problems with the yolk.
i wanted to get a moser soon, but after this install and all the problems and quality of parts, i am thinking of going else where.
just to let everyone know, i am not exaggerating at all, i am giving u the easy/watered down version. and it wasn't like we weren't experienced. my friend has been doing this for a long time (over 20 years) so it wasn't like we didn't know what we were doing.

He had problems with the yoke probably because it was for a 1350 series u-joint.

getting it in wasn't the problem. it was to make sure everything was perfect. the place on the axle where the springs are put one was not at the same angle as the other one. it was no biggie, but down the road it could cause problems.
let me say that he had this custom made to his specs, but moser did a **** job in putting it together. custom= smaller axles so he can fit more tire.
these were also c-clip eliminator axles. there were problems with the caliper bracket and a couple of other things. i don't want to get to in depth.

Re: moser forgets shims.
Just got off the phone with Moser today. They forgot my 1/8" shims as well.
Apparently this isn't uncommom at all... the customer service guy even TOLD me he had this happen earlier as well (as in THE SAME DAY).
The product looks fine, clean from the set up I had, but if I ever do this again it'll be a Strange unit:
1) Strange uses a solid-pinion bearing spacer, Moser DOESN'T EVEN OFFER ONE.
2) Strange provides the brake backing plates for 93-97 Fbodies so teh bearings can be pressed by them and delivered with axles installed.
3) Axle Lube it included... since the axles can be done by Strange.
4) Strange includes a 1310 to 1350 conversion U-joint (I had to buy my from NAPA for ~$30).
5) Strange uses stock axle tubes so the stock LCA brackets, Sway Bar brackets, and PHR relocation kits can all interchange with 10-bolts.
6) I have yet to get it installed, but I've heard band things about Moser's gear set up and it seems to be common for guys to pay to have it set up by a local pro instead. This better not be the case with mine or I'll go nuts, but that's the impression I'm left with.
Strange just seems like a better product all round. Wish I'd found all this info before putting down bills on a Moser.

2. Yes Strange provides the caliper bracket, but how much more $$$$ is the Strange assembly. You can always purchase new caliper brackets/backing plates from a GM dealer for less than $60.00 for the pair and ship them to Moser. They will gladly assemble it for you.
3. Axle lube, again look at the price, I mean 3 qts of 80w90 is around $6.00, and $5.00 for the GM posi additive if you ordered a posi rear
4. Conversion U joints are sold everywhere, my local NAPA is around $22.00, again there is a big price difference between the two rear assemblies.
5. Do you really want a "strong" rearend with stock diameter tubes? I wouldn't
I am a Moser dealer, and have personally never had a problem with the 7+ rearend that I have ordered for customers. Moser makes a quality product at a very competitive price. I think the main problem is all these internet based companies selling rearend to people out of town or out of state. All the rearends I order for my local customers I personally setup and assemble. Even when I am putting new backing plates on it is still much cheaper than a Strange rear
Re: moser forgets shims.
I'm a fan and purchased a strange myself. I just like the fact that it's dyno tested before it's shipped fully-assembled and ready to install Vs getting a crate of parts that need to be assembled and who knows if it's going to all fit together right and if all the parts are there. I deemed it worth it to spend the extra $$ (seeing the difference in price was like $100) to get a fully-assembled dyno tested unit.
And just because the tubes are larger on the moser and smaller on the strange doesn't mean they are stronger, wall thickness matters a LOT when it comes to tubing and strength. I know the strange tubes are thicker than the stocker 10-bolt tubes, w/o a doubt.

Re: moser forgets shims.
The "price difference" USED to be hugh... like $800... but not anymore. Strange is +/- $100 from a Moser depending where you buy it. Tbyrne had a great sale on the streange units about 2 weeks before I bought my Moser for $100 MORE than the Strange sale price.
Price just isn't the issue anymore.
In addition to the solid pinion bearing spacer, Strange also dual-drills the axle flanges giving you the option of changing between 1/2" and 12mm lugs in the future. The extra holes also give you the ability to use them to access the brake backing plate nuts if you can't find a 1/4" wratchet to do the job (not normally an issue).
As predicted by 90% of all Moser owners.... mine whines noticiably at 60mph+.
Yeah, I 'm a Moser owner... yeah, I know it'll hold up to abuse... still not crazy about the product though.
And yes... I had to call them to get my shims sent.

Re: moser forgets shims.
Exactly what shims are you guys talking about? I do not recall installing any shims with my moser 12-bolt.
The only problem I have with it is making a left turn. On tight left turns it sounds like a bearing is squeeling. It doesn't make any noise at all on right turns.

Re: moser forgets shims.
I'm not crying about having it put together, I'm just more keen on having the whole thing tested together to make sure that everything is installed properly and all works together perfectly when I get it, Strange Dyno tests every unit before it's crated up and shipped out.

I know Tbyrne carries their axles, I got mine through them on a GP for a great price.
