M6 Downshift Issue

I've had my car since December 02 and have never had an issue like this up until a few weeks ago. It happens maybe 1 out of 10 times when I'm downshifting.

I'll downshift from 6th to 5th, then 5th to 4th, but when I go to shift out of 4th it's stuck. I mean I can force it out if I wanted but at first I let the clutch out and pressed it again, which didn't do anything then I can wait a second and it will slide out with a bit more force than normal. Then I thought, since up until yesterday I had been on a down hill slope downshifting to go back up the otherside of the dip, that it was still being engaged with force from the car coasting down the hill. Then it happened yesterday on level ground.

It's only happened in 4th gear so far. Other than this odd issue I haven't had anything out of the ordinary happen. I'm used to being able to shift with a flick of my wrist, no real force unless I'm getting on it, but it just seems odd that it's normal yet it has just came up.

It doesn't whine or vibrate or anything odd. Just like it always has been other than once in a great while it will stick when downshifting.

Thanks,

Re: M6 Downshift Issue

Sounds like your shifter is either sticking somewhere in that mechanism, or your 4th gear syncro is shot.

I don't know about the Syncro, it doesn't grind or anything going in or out of gear like you would expect it too.

I may change the fluid in it and see if that helps. It's been quite a while since I changed it. Couldn't hurt.

Re: M6 Downshift Issue

All I know is that when my T56 got stuck in 4th, it ended up needing a pretty substantial rebuild. I'm not sure if your issue is the same as mine, since the very first time mine got stuck, it was STUCK. No amount of force I could apply would get it out of gear.

This happened at the top end of a quarter mile strip. I coasted back to the pits, then drove ~75 miles home, all in 4th gear.

Bonus: performance rebuild! My T56 is now good for 700 hp and 700 lb-ft.

Re: M6 Downshift Issue

It did it again yesterday after several days of not doing it. This time I was in town. Normally I'll run in 5th gear @ 35-40 mph. I came up on a stop light and pressed the clutch and just downshifted to 4th as I came to a stop. Once I was completely stopped I went to put it in 1st. It was stuck, I put a little more force on it than I had before, but not a great amount and it didn't come out. I let the clutch out a little until the RPM's dropped a bit and pressed the clutch back in then it eased out of gear like normal. Then I drove another 15 minutes in town, then 25 miles to another town, then through that town and home which is about 15 miles and it didn't do it again. I had drove about 30 miles when it did it and then 40-50 miles after with no issues. It is very weird. The tranny is, I'm assuming, the original and has 181k on it. Like is said earlier, other than this issue that just came up within the last month or so, it doesn't feel or sound any different than normal.

How much does a rebuild normally cost for a M6? Isn't there a site online that sells quality rebuild kits for a decent price? I'd been to it before, but can't remember what it is.
