LT1 T-56 vs. LS1 T-56
LT1 T-56 vs. LS1 T-56
Hi everyone. I'm sorry for bringing up what is probably a beaten to death horse.
I'm looking at the possibility of swapping a T-56 in for my current 4+3 tranny in my '87 vette with modified L98 over the winter. I'm told that the input shaft on the LS1 T-56 is longer and therefore unusable for my application.
Is this the case and if so is it relatively easy to swap out the input shafts during a rebuild on the unit?
What other differences are there to be aware of? Bellhousing? Clutch setup? Rated torque values?
Thank you for your help!

Hey Brian, the 98-UP LS-1 does indeed have a longer input shaft than the 1993-97 LT-1 T-56. You can replace the input shaft on the LS-1 version for the shorter LT-1 version , along with the front cover to use the external SLAVE CYLINDER, but you just might want to retain that LS-1 inputshaft and integral H.T.O.B , and then get that MCLEOD T-56 universal bellhousing, since it is designed for the LS-1 T-56 version, plus the AFTER-MARKET T-56. I know it is expensive, but you will then have a DRAG RACING safe bellhousing, for that SUPER-RAMMED L-98, and when/if you ever up the cubes, you will be able to get a clutch that will handle the power. This is the method I would take Brian, trust me, I have the 1993-97 T-56 and I am sick of these CORNY clutch setups, I tried most of them, ( LT-4 PP with CLUTCH-NET disc--JUNK!!!) (SPEC STAGE III-- ABSOLUTE JUNK!!!, this one destroyed my spare FLYWHEEL
(LT-4 PP with SLP disc-- JUNK!!!) and (LT-4 PP with RAM disc, was OK, but it slips after awhile also. The absolute BEST 1993-97 T-56 CLUTCH is the MCLEOD STREET-TWIN. If you are going to insist on the SWAPPING of the inputshaft for the LT-1 T-56, this is the only way.....PERIOD, I'm saving for one myself. Good luck Brian, and see you on Corvette Forum.

Wow thanks for all that.
You may or may not of seen I also destroyed my centerforce D/F clutch so I'm already planning on putting a Mcleod Street Twin back in there. Is it even available for the LS1 style tranny? I didn't look to see yet as I was only looking at the T-10 versions right now.
I don't mind going with that Mcleod bellhousing you mentioned. Is it SFI approved?
My 2 big decisions right now are.....
1. Do I want to put a street twin clutch into my car now and just go with that until things explode again.
2. Do I want to park the car for winter and pick up a 6-speed, have it rebuilt, cryo'd, and put that and a clutch in either over winter or early spring.

I think that Mcleod makes the ST for the LS-1 as well, and I would just wait, and do what you plan on doing over the winter, plus use the 6-Speed
. That 4+3 is marginal, and the kind of grip you will achieve from the ST, that 4+3 will just give up the GHOST quicker. HTH's Brian.

I like to break things.
I've got a spare 4+3 I am going to allow my brother to rebuild in his tranny class at tech college down in RI. I was going to also have it cryo treated and see if it would hold up. The 6-speed idea is looking more and more tempting though.....
