LT1 to LS1 T-56 Conversion.

I got a pretty good deal on a 93 T56 so I bought it. I am planning on putting in it in my next project (68 firebird) backed up to a LQ9. I have heard of people converting the early T-56's to the later ones by replacing the adapter plate, input shaft, and slave cylinder. Is this all I need? Will the later input shaft work with the 93(wide ratio)? How difficult do you think this will be?

I am by no means new to this stuff, but I have never really messed with a manual trans other than clutch changes, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

LS1 and LT1 T56 trans are completely different when it comes to hooking them up. The LS1's have a longer input shaft than the LT1 style, and the trans itself has a different bolt pattern.

Right, I understand that. I know people have converted them, and I was wondering what was involved. I stated in my post that I would need a LS1 front bellhousing/adapter plate (i'm not sure if it is one or two pieces) and an input shaft. What I need to know is what else is needed.

Ok, I'm not sure what bolt pattern those engines use. If converting to a LS1 then you will have to use a LS1 Bellhousing. It is my understanding that the LS1 bellhousing will mate up to either SBC/BBC/LTx/LSx, but you will have to convert your clutch system to use a hydraulic push type linkage.

Well, if that is the case wouldn't the LT1 t56 bellhousing work then?

I am picking up the motor and trans this week, I guess I can just try it and see.

I would think that the LT1 bellhousing would work to, but I am trying to find that out for myself right now.

You should check to see what kind of bolt pattern the engine has and that will determine what tranny/linkage to use. You could use a McLeod 8710 bellhousing and it would solve all your problems, but the bellhousing costs $400.

Thats what I have been told, but then I still have to run the LT1 clutch. I really need to find the LS1 stuff to convert it.

Re: LT1 to LS1 T-56 Conversion.

So which one has a different bolt pattern than a regular SBC, the lt1 or ls1?

From what I have gathered the LT1 shares the tradional SBC pattern, where the LS1 has a modified pattern with a hole @ 12 o'clock and does not use one of the side bolts.

The McLeod bellhousing requires you to use the LS1 push style clutch, not the LT1 pull style clutch.

Call Tyler at t56kit.com. He has done performed the swap every which way possible. He will know exactly what to do. Also, try camaros.net and pro-touring.com, they will know more than these guys can potentially give you (not to say that they do not know what they are doing). The folks at the other sites have much experience with converting old to new

Re: LT1 to LS1 T-56 Conversion.

The 93 versions of the T56 have the lowest torque capacity rating of any of the LT1/LS1 T56's.
