LT1/Ls1 rearend swap
LT1/Ls1 rearend swap
I have a couple questions. 1) Is this a direct swap? I blew my rearend, and found a GOOD DEAL on one from an 02 SS A4 w/ about 12000 miles on it.
I don't have traction control, is that an issue?
Can I use my brakes, or will I have to use LS1?
He said he is keeping his backing plates, can I use mine?
Any other info would be great. Thanks
I have a 96 Z M6

Re: LT1/Ls1 rearend swap
It will bolt right in, however there are some issues to address.
Since you dont have traction control, you have a 3 series abs system. If the ls1 rear does have traction control, its a 4 series ABS system (however there are 3 series available in some cars). End result is you lose your ABS and will throw codes if its not a 3 series.
The axles are a slightly different length, so while your brakes and backing plates will bolt on, they will cause the brakes to bind when all installed. You can shim the backing plates and the caliper to get it all aligned with washers, but its really touchy. I got mine to work, but it liked to eat the inside pad every 7k miles or so because it grabbed funny.
The solution is ls1 rear brakes and backing plates.
