lt1/4l60e/273 question

i just installed a lt1/4l60e into a 90 camaro. the stock rear was 273. the car seems awful slugish in drive. <i know its not good to do so. but i can push the breaks in and hold the gas to the floorboard and i cant break traction>
however in reverse i can hold the break and the rear of the car will actually turn sideways. do you think the 273 is the culprit here? how much would it improve in performance with 342s?
