LS1 or rebalance factory DS?

My factory shaft is vibrating pretty bad. Is there a way to rebalance it or would it be better to replace it to a LS1 aluminum? I have only bolt ons now but I do run nitto drag radials with a 2800 stall and 373 rear end so when I hook it launches pretty hard.
How much does a rebalance run usually?

Re: LS1 or rebalance factory DS?

At what MPH does it start to vibrate?

The problem with the stock steel DS vibration at high DS RPM was so bad that GM issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) that allowed people to have the steel DS replaced with a 1LE aluminum DS. The TSB expired with the warranty, so its not an option at this point.

The problem is that at high RPM the steel DS reaches its critical frequency and starts to vibrate. It's seldom a matter of balance. The problem only shows up at higher speeds, but show up sooner as you go to the higher numerical rear axle.

Get an aluminum DS from a 1LE or an LS1 car. Just don't try to put 500HP through either of those with sticky tires.

Re: LS1 or rebalance factory DS?

I just posted the driveshaft differences thread before seeing this.
Is this why some of the steel driveshafts have balancers?
The aluminum one I got recently was from a member who said it came out of a 95 M6 and it doesn't have a balancer.
I supposed someone had previously put it in the car.
The first aluminum shaft I had I seem to recall it having a balancer too like the steel one I have has.

The steel one-piece driveshafts have a damper ring, not a "balancer".

Did any of the aluminum ones also come with a damper?
I seem to recall a damper on one we shortened for the gearvendors
but then couldn't use.
