looking to put an IRS on my Camaro, input would be appreciated.
hey guys. i have a couple things i am looking to do this fall when i pretty much disassemble my car.. one of those things is to give a try at putting an IRS in the car. my use of the vehicle will not include the 1/4 mile, as i would only be able to go down the track once(i am not putting a full fledged roll cage in the car). it is mostly for the twisties, and a couple clutch drops here and there.
anyways... my first option is a dana 36 or dana 44 out of a vette.. preferably a dana 44..
something like this dana 44
!but! .. i was looking around for dana 44's and found that the viper uses a super dana 44..
like this
i first noticed that they looked similar to eachother, then found that it was in fact a dana 44 setup in the vipers..
now, do any of you have any idea if they would be somewhat interchangeable? maybe by swapping the cap on the vette dana to the viper dana for the suspension? because i could buy a dana 36 complete setup for cheap, then pick up a viper dana 44 center section for something reasonable.. and essentially have a combo that would handle the 420+ horses i am gonna be putting through the car..
i just put this idea together today, and kinda got a little excited about it, so if i made a real dumb assumption, please forgive me

This would be a major, major undertaking. You would have to fab mounts for everything (diff housing, shocks, springs, suspension arms, etc.). Unless there's a kit out there????
It's probably been done before, though.

lol, i don't think that the word "major", even when used twice, is big enough to describe what this project is gonna be like.. i think something like "ginormous", or "uber massive" would be best..
but yea, all kinds of stuff will have to be fabbed for it, and i do not believe there is a kit for it..
mostly, at the moment, i am wondering if the super dana 44 center portion used in the viper is close enough to the size of a dana 36 used in the vette so that i could use the peripherals of the 36 with the meat of the super 44..
i am really excited about this... and along with the other projects i have lined up, this particular deal is going to be the biggest, most difficult and time consuming of them all..

Lol, go here:
http://frrax.com/rrforum/index.php?
And ask these guys what they think about your irs plans. There is a wealth of knowledge on that site when it comes to road racing f-bodies. Most of the guys there are decent fabricators too.
The only point to putting in the irs, that I can see, is to be able to say you have irs. If it was a bolt in affair it might be worth it, but there are many other areas of your chassis/suspension you could spend your time and money on and get more results from.

you have no idea what my, or my close friends, fabricating experience is. and you sure do not have a clue what i was actually asking in this thread.. and you absolutely did not see the clause i included at the bottom of my original post saying that i was shooting from the hip on this idea.. i will do extensive searching for info before i actually start on anything like this, so don't worry your little head.
anyways, my outlook on anything mechanical is that with enough patience, time and money anything can be done.
i want an IRS for my reasons, not to do better at the track, or to have the only IRS on a 4th gen, or to impress any of you guys..
:sigh: on a better note.. thanks to the people that were positive in this post.. but my question still stands, does the super 44 work with any 36 stuff?
Re: looking to put an IRS on my Camaro, input would be appreciated.
i'd love an irs, if it didnt require so much work
i cant be too sure about this but i'm told that ythe c4 vette irs is a crappy irs in comparison to others, but u cant beat a super dana 44
i feel the benefits of an irs to handling is basically if u hit a bump around a corner
and whether this is good or bad is for you to judge, but there obviously is alot more to adjust, camber issues, track, maybe toe, as well as instant center and roll center
to put it in is a feat in and of itself
to get it to work really well, would be impressive

holy cow!! ok, lets pretend i am not even remotely thinking about putting an IRS on a camaro.. i have a vette, yea a vette! and it has a dana 36 in the rear(yes, the crappy IRS that is an equivelant to the 10 bolt). I saw a super dana 44 on ebay off a viper, can i swap it out with mine?? well, i am gonna go out for a ride in my vette now. yep, my nice red vette. i love my vette.
edit: i just realized that in my haste to post initially, in the subject line i asked for input on putting an IRS into a camaro.. but i should not have put that in the subject line, shoulda put something about dana 36 and super dana 44 similarites..

I don't have any experience with either of those diffs, and have no experience with custom fabbing anything for an IRS on an f-body, but if you manage to start your project and get it on there, I would like to here about it. Good luck to you. Maybe you should start a new post about the differential instead, so you could get the answers you are looking for.

I know this isn't what you are asking, but have you considered using a Cobra IRS setup? I've seen it done in a lot of First gen stang magazines. The rears have their own frame/cage setup that you mount in place. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-04...spagenameZWDVW

The idea of an IRS 4th Gen intrigues me too. I did a google search once for something like "camaro IRS" and found a guy who sells C4 installation kits for 1st gen Camaros. You might want to look for that.
There was an arfticle in a recent Hot Rod magazine where someone put the C4 IRS into a 66 Vette, it looked pretty neat.
