knotchy shifting / occasional grinding

Okay I got my car a couple months ago and I really don't know anything about the workings of clutches and drivetrains.

My car for some reason has the stock shifter, not the Hurst. This is weird to me because it has every single other option so??? but anyway when im hard on the throttle and I go to do the 1-2 shift i can't just slam it down it's like it takes a LOT of pressure and it pauses it the neutral zone for a sec before notching down into 2nd no matter how hard I pull.

Then sometimes when im at a light and have the clutch to the floor sitting in neutral it then go to put it into 1st, it is really hard to get into gear and might even kind of fight me and grind??

Then finally, sometimes when i do a hard shift to 4th it will grind.

Other than that my shifter just has a general notchy feel to it no matter what gear youre selecting instead of just going into gear.

So what is causing it being so hard to put into gear, why does it grind when i have the clutch all the way down, and would buying an aftermarket shfiter get rid of the notchiness?

Sounds more like a hydraulics problem. Maybe your clutch is just barely engaged and is spinning your transmission a little.

The shifter is supposed to be a bit "notchy" based on the design. You could modify it to be smoother but it is a lot of work to go through for something like that.

If it's not hydraulics then all of your syncros are worn...which isn't likely

Just my guess though, i'm no expert.

My '97 SS did something similar, and I just got it fixed. It turns out that the slave cylinder for the clutch was leaking, and the hydraulics failed. I had to replace the clutch and the slave cylinder, not an inexpensive repair either.

Do you mean not an expensive repair? Hydraulics for that car should be less than $100. The clutch isn't cheap but it's a good time to upgrade.

Either way spending $500 on hydraulics and a new clutch is much cheaper than rebuilding the tranny, which you will eventually have to do if you keep driving it like that.

You don't have to tell me twice. I got it fixed right away. On top of that my brake master cylinder was leaking too, so I had to fix that as well. All told with tax and everything, I spent $1100 fixing my car, but I agree, that's a lot less than rebuilding a transmission.

Oh I guess I didn't figure in having a shop do the work. That does make it more pricey. If it isn't your only car then give it a try yourself next time, the trouble is probably worth the money you save.
