I was first thinking of doing a cam but then I'd have to do drivetrain work anyways because of that pos 10 bolt. If I were to get a 2800-3000 stall, 3.42 gears, girdle, tune, put ud pulley on I got, and maybe a transmission kit how much would my gas milage drop from the 25mpg I get now when theres nobody to race. I almost got beat by a SRT-4 so its time for parts. If you heard 10 years ago a neon keeping up with a z28. It did have that stage 2 or 3 in my defense. How much would a mild cam be, installed also. This is a daily driver so I need my gas milage. I really don't know what to do. Reading the forums just makes me more confused of which way to go. Its 2000rpm at 78mph now.

 

My 00 Formula with just a lid and loudmouth and the Yank st3500/3.42 combo got 25 highway and 21 mixed. I never did just city driving so I don't know what it would have done that way.

 

Highway cruising mileage (which is what I assume you are referring to wrt 25mpg) will not change much. Mileage in stop and go suburban/urban driving will drop a lot with a converter (typically by at least 25%, sometimes more). A cam install is a lot of work on an LT1. Figure at least 8h labor (or more) at whatever your local shop rate is. Parts are a big variable - you can spend $500 up to thousands depending on the parts you select.

Its an ls1. So should I go with a 2800 and 3.42s? I would like to still have about 21-22mpg. My car does 0-100 in 10.4 now, on camera, so what do you think after the convertor and gears? Plus I have my pulley thats not on and im going to get tuned soon. I would like to have a 11.9999 car. So the hwy milage would stay the same cause the converter would be locked? and the 3.42s would make my 70mph 1800 to 2250rpm. Sorry for all the questions but I don't know which way to go with this car and the speed bug is killing me.

 

On the highway, you will lose a little mpg due to the gear change.
