How much to switch to 3 series carrier?
Cool I also have 2.73 gears and I didnt know someone made special gears for it. What wold you recommend for a daily driver I still want to get decent gas mileage just bolt ons like a cai and cat back maybe some 1.6 RR but no internals on motor. 3.42 3.73 ???
I thought GM had motive gears for both 2 series and 3 series carrier. I'd just stick with your 2 series and make sure you notify where your ordering from that the gears are for 2 series when you place the order. Also if your looking for better performance but still want to retain as much mpg as possible I'd go with 3.42's if you do frequent highway driving. If not go with 3.73's. Although each set of gears is gonna put your foot on the gas a lot more...trust me. The added fun will make mpg suffer for sure.
Thanks I will have to check about the series 2 gears and see what they offer I bought the ones for my truck from Jegs but I heard Richmond gears are quite loud my buddies Mustang has this issue it sounds like the rear end is going he had it done twice by a shop that builds alot of very good stuff.

You can definitely order gears (upto 4.10's or 4.56's I think
) for 2-series carriers
. I know 'cause I had 3.73's in my car last year..............however, they were Richmond's, and whether it's common or not, they did whine really bad, and I had my factory 2.73's put back in
(I may be playing with gears again this summer though
).
I think for a daily-driver that is going to see some highway use, 3.42's are probably the best. My friend has them in his '96 T/A and he loves them
. The 3.73's weren't the best for out on the highway IMO:blah:.

Damn, just like that you guys helped me make my decision! 342s it will be and for a 2 series carrier.

Same here I have 3.42's in my 80 Z its only a 3 speed but it does OK on the highway and still low enough to chirp second. How about 1 more question while I am here what is the deal with not being able to select first gear on the auto. Is there a way to change it? Does the tranny allow you to shift to first if you change the shifter or is it a mute point anyway? I do not want to swap trannies in the car.
I think there is a way but I couldnt figure it out myself? Something with lifting the consle and getting rid of a rubber stoper or something? Search some posts and you will find it. Mine only has the 2nd gear option also!
In auto cars that came stock with 2.73's we weren't able to select 1st gear, but it is available. Just lift the little rectangular console up that fits around the shifter. In case your not sure what I'm talking about it's about 6 inches wide by about 10 inches long and houses the gear selection information on it. Then on the shifter linkage somewhere(can't remember where but you'll know when you see it) there is a little black plastic square about the size of a jolly rancher. Maybe a little smaller, but you get the idea. Anyway all you need to do is remove that. It's basically just a stop tab and that's the only purpose it serves. I think I ended up chopping mine off with some wire snips, but whatever works for you. Once you do that if you wanna sand it down or anything to clean it up go for it, but as long as you can slide past it that's all that matters. Put the console top back on and tada, you now have first gear. It obviously won't show up on the gear selection thing, but you can shift right back past it into 1st. This is probably a 5 minute job if you've never done it before. Good luck.
