How loud are the new Dana 60's?

I'm interested in getting in on the Tbyrne group purchase but don't want one if they are annoyingly loud as posted on LS1Tech.

Anybody have any noise reports.

I don't think dana 60's have all the bugs worked out yet. I think I'm going with the tried and true 9". Take a look at all the unhappy customers.

Re: How loud are the new Dana 60's?

That's a shame.

I'm sure that the quality will improve... there's no reason for the Dana 60 to be noisy. From reading those threads on ls1tech.com, Strange seems to be rather hit-or-miss with these rears. Lots of guys are reporting major noise, others say it's perfectly quiet.

I guess my 10-bolt better last a little longer!

Re: How loud are the new Dana 60's?

I don't know about the Dana 60's but my Moser 9 inch isn't very quiet at all. It is definitely louder my exhaust at cruising RPMs 25MPH and up and I have LTs and no cats through a hooker cat back. Two people riding in the car have to raise their voices to have a conversation. I've even had the rear setup with new gears (same 3.89 ratio) at a local gear shop with a very good reputation. Still wine like hell.

I was talking with a Moser tech the other day and he told me there is no way to get the 9 inch to quiet down because of the larger ring and pinion and with a tubular suspension like the Torque arm, control arms and panhard rod with poly bushing. All those components help carry the noise to the interior of the car. Honestly I've not been extreamly happy with my 9 inch so far, not only does it have gear wine, also it's axels are not straight. I've had an annoying squeaking brake problem. Put the car jack stands and ran the rear wheels at about 25MPH. I could see the roater was not rotating straight. So I removed the calipers and put a dial indicator on the axle hub, found .015 runout. So I will be sending my axels back to be remachined

Sorry for the rant, I'm not saying that the Moser 9inch is junk because I know it is not. There are a lot of guys that have and no problems at all with them, they also a very strong rear. I must have gotten a lemon or something.

I have been researching this alot lately. It seems that most of the guys that build and sell rear ends are recommending the 9 inch. Plus the added convenience of simple removal and installation of the center section is what makes me want one.

The only problems I've heard about the 9" is the torque arm bumping the tunnel.

Interesting. Why would you need to change gears often in order to take advantage of the 9 inch? Yeah, its a great feature, but how often are you gonna change gears?

Setting up gears is a tedious process that requires removal of the center section and shimming. Then you drive it again. Read the marks on the gears and shim again. With the 9" I could drop the center section relatively easy.

I would like to set up the center section myself (or get driveline solutions to do it the first time) and buy the moser housing, axle and torque arm package. It appears to be the least expensive way and it is 25 lbs lighter than the dana 60.

And if the gears start howling like 97pontta's then it would not be a big deal to buy different brand gears and reset them up.

I don't use ABS anymore. I removed the modulater from the engine bay.

My gears howled from the first mile. I also have not heard of many problems with the 9 inch when I was researching rears. I must have just gotten unlucky. I would buy moser again tough, thier housing is top notch.

I know that Strange 12-bolts with 3.90 gears are known for being loud... enough that Strange "doesn't promote" that ratio. Have you considered trying a different ratio?

Yes, i thougha bout 4.10s but like the ratio I have now. But I have though about the ratio being the problem also. Just kind of hard to cough up the cash for another set of gears when the set I have now only have about 5K miles on them and the previous set had about 6K on them. Maybe I should just quit bitching then right

I must have a freak 10 bolt. I still don't have any noise with over 500HP. I'm sure if I put some sticky tires on it there will be problems.

D60's came in trucks and some older muscle cars from the factory... don't blame the d60s, blame whoever set them up if they are loud.
