How to drop trans w/o dropping motor??

I am trying to drop my trans (4L60E) in my 1995 Formula without dropping the motor and subframe. I can not reach the top trans bolts at the back of the motor. I have pulled the plastic cowl molding and still cannot reach the bolts on top. Any way to do this?

Really long extensions and a swivel socket. You do it from under the car. My dad and I can drop the trans out of my car in about 45 minutes now. We've done it too many times.

i used a swivel socket, a u-joint, and a total of like 3 feet of extentions. the ratchet ended up being next to the output shaft of the tranny.

Often times I find I have to get those top bolts from under the car...really long extensions help greatly in this regard. I haven't yet attempted the job in a 4th gen F-body, but I have on Jeeps, Explorers, and my Dad's Stingray. Usually I'll end up using 3-4 feet of extensions and a breaker bar.

It can only be done from under the car. As mentioned, a swivel 9/16" and long extensions make an easy job out of it.

best tool for the job is the 3' extension that is 1/2'' drive to a 3/8'' swivel socket.it doesnt twist like the 3/8 extension

It also helps to drop the *** end of the trans down a bit. Thust bringing the bellhousing into clear view.

Good Luck.

And when you finally get it out, take a big hammer and beat the crap out of the trans tunnel on each side, where those top two bolts are, to form a small pocket. That will make it easier the next time .

It also makes it very difficult to get the bolt out as it tends to hit the body at a rough angle when it's all the way backed out.

Sounds like you need a better transmission builder
