I just got a used 12 bolt strange rear end. It has a loud noise when coasting, I mean real loud. when you excel or turn corners it seems to get pretty quiet. I checked the fluid and it had 2 1/2 quarts in it i refilled it with 5 1/2 + gm additive and same noise. was wondering about when its there and when its not? To me it sounds like gears or pinun bearing? Any info would be really appreciated!

 

Any one? Just called Strange they said not to use the top level hole they have in the rear girdle. It is in the wrong location, and thats why 5-1/2 quarts went in. It only needs 2 to 2 1/2 quarts. I didn't know but that isn't the noise. Someone had to have a noise like this. It has to be the big pinun bearing i am thinking. Any one?

 

To me, it sounds like the gears were not set up correctly, or the crush sleeve has a problem. If it only make noise when its coasting, it may be because that's when the gears are running on the opposite sides of the teeth from where they run when its accelerating. If there's a bad setup, the contact pattern problem may only show up on decel.

 

i caled strange they sed they use a solid not a crush sleave and it is not a wine it is a loud baring grind you may be right thow strange set up the rer but it souns so loud t thot the trane was draging on the ground has to be a carer or pinun baring. but if the nut to the pinun sosened coudent it make this noise the gy i got it from swars it onley had a small wine
