Question Help on possible gear selection A4

Hello. I was wondering if it would help the pick-up on my car to switch from my 3.23 gears to a 3.42, this is a daily driver and not for the track, just for tooling around town making some noise sometime--Worth the cost or should i get the 3.73 gears. Please see my mods below. Is there a gear in between the two that will fit a camaro 4l60E? Thanks Dwayne

I think to complement those mods the 3.73's would be about right. It will get you into the power band of that cam faster too. Making it much more fun to drive.

Re: Help on possible gear selection A4

i had 3:73's and went to 3:42's becouse i was getting real close to the rev limit in 3rd gear. with my stall and under power i was very close to poping rev limit. and any more faster i definatly would. plus the highway rpm is better with the 3:42's. i have not been to the track woth the new gears but on the street it feels better. also with the lower gear it only seems to help off the line with is compensated by by the stall. although with lower gears you get into the power range quicker, with the higher gear your in it longer.

all that being said i went with 3:42's and after i hit the n2o on the track i may need to go back to 3:23. and befor you think i an running 140 in the 1/4, i'm only in the 10x range but i'm pushing on the stall so i run higher rpm's then normal. so i would recomend if you canged the ear only go to 3:42 to keep the drivability abd of you ever decide to do a little more such as cam heads stall maybe a little juice youll still be in good shape, plus you will be running 2300rpm at 70.

With what you have done with your car, 3.73's I think would get the most out of your car. You can change your shift points if thats what your worried about. But with a stock stall, those 3.73's are going to get you out of the box pretty good. Your not going too notice much a difference with 3.42's. Just to give you an idea, running down the interstate at 80, my rpm's are right are 2600 or so. A lot can be changed with the type of tcc your using as well. Hope this helps.

Re: Help on possible gear selection A4

It depends if you want more fun driving around the city or more fun on the highway.

I find with 3.23's you're shifting in and out of O/D at 30 mph. With the 3.42's you're fine at 30 mph...it does the back and forth thing around 40 mph. With 3.73's, you're in overdrive around the city pretty much all the time. 40 mph = O/D period! Basically 3.73's are fun for the city no matter what the speed.

3.73's will let you pass people on the highway without downshifting to 3rd....but I find they rev too high for continuous highway driving. Since I do mostly highway cruising, I like the 3.42's best. Headers/Borla are going to be too noisy with 3.73's in my opinion.

Then again, I would only switch to 3.42 if I had 2.73. With 3.23, it's not worth the switch for such a small ratio. In that case, I'd go 3.73.

Take your choice, flip a coin, whatever.
