Help! How much fluid does the rear diff take???
I just installed a new G2 diff cover so I can have a drain and fill plug.
I'm trying to fill up the diff and theres no end to it!!
I would have thought 2 quarts would fill it, I put in 1 bottle of GM limited slip diff fluid, and i'm after putting in 3 quarts of gear oil!
I just got a 4th to see if it just needed some topping up to bring it to the fill plug but I still cannot feel it when I stick my finger in there.
Please help!

Really need help fellas because I don't know if I should drive her because I'm afraid of what can happen....because I don't know what can happen.
I have her on my level garage floor with the drain plug out, nothing is coming out of it.
When I reach in with my finger I can't feel any fluid either.

capacties are in the owners manual if you got one, just for future reference
it says "Rear Axle Lubricant 3.5 pt. (1.7L)"
i'm guessing that's just the additive stuff you need to put in on second thought
it just says fill it til it's below the fill plug
so sorry, can't help you there

Thanks for the reply, but one thing I notice about this drivetrain forum is it doesn't get the rapid repsonse like the ol general LT1 forum.
Right now my car is in the garage and I'm afaraid to drive it in fear of what could happen.

yea, i just noticed a post in the lt1 tech forum and it said capacity should be about 2 quarts gear oil and a bottle of the gm limited slip additive or whatever
i wouldn't drive it if i were you, no sense in screwing something up more

where are you filling it through? There's a plug on the side of the pumpkin that you should be filling through... (Not the COVER!!!)
It usuallt takes me 1 bottle of Limited slip additive, and 1.5-1.75 bottles of gear lube before it starts pouring out the opening.
A little hint to make it easier to fill through the side hole - put a 3-6" long piece of clear 3/8" tubing over the tip of the gear lube bottle, then use that to give you the room you need for the bottle.

One more question, how good would that GM limited slip additive mix with the gear oil?
I'm afraid is it was sitting on top of the oil and i drained it out...I doubt it but anything is possible I suppose

No Problems, well, luck has it's benifets. But you are loosing some RWHP due to that though, you've basically filled up your axle tubes with gear lube, thus increasing rotating resistance.
I just replace my cover with a TA 10 bolt cover. It took about 1.75 quarts incl the additive. I filled mine from the side of the pumpkin. But the directions on the new cover said to remove the side fill hole plug and fill from the new fill hole on the new TA cover untill fluid comes out the side hole. I didn't want to remove the pan hard bar to get access to the new plug on the back of the cover. But I don't understand why it would take that much fluid and have it not come gushing out the side.
