HELP! Axles have in-out motion, what is causing it?

I've taken the wheels off and the axles are moving in and out. I looked inside the diff and the 2 plates holding the axles apart fell out when i unscrewed them. The left axle has pretty big movement (about 2mm), the right one (it's almost new, has but a few thousand miles on it) just a little. The plates holding them apart don't seem to be worn or anything, the C-clips do look worn though.

What do you think could cause this movement? Is it possible for the left axle to have worn out at the head so much or is it just the C clips? The car is manual, with torsen, 57000 miles (not sure if it has been tempered with).

Please help!

Thanks, Felix.

it is normal for c-clip axles to have some movement in and out,,, i would not worry about 2mm of play in the axle

I'm worried because it had no play 6 months ago and when i drive it makes clunking sounds that it wasn't doing before... When i cruise (not in gear) i can hear it like a cyclic metallic beating...

You're fine. In-out motion of the axle shaft is typical.

yeah i would have to agree that some in-and-out is ok, but i think you should continue to investigate the clunking and metalic sound, maybe bearings?
