Grinding Noise From Rear End..Help

Ok, so I'm driving to the store yesterday and I have my windows up and air conditioner pumping and I start to hear what almost sounds like one of my pipes dragging on the ground... but not quite as loud as that would be. I park at the store and check to see if something is hitting the ground, nothing... and I check my brake pads, they are fine. So when I leave the store, I roll down my window and keep the A/C off to hear better and sure enough, a hollow grinding noise is coming from the back of my car. It sounds the worse when I am coming to a stop, kinda like gears grinding to a halt, but you can still hear it while driving slowly. I'm thinkin' my rear end went out. Tell me what you think. Also, if you know, how much this will set me back if it is the rear end. Thanks for your time.

I'd have my brakes checked before assuming it is the gears. Just because you"checked" the pads doesn't necessarily mean everything is good. JMHO
