Gears or save for a Rear?

Hey guys, I've been plannign on adding 4.10 gears to my stock rear end. i don't really drag race my car, but I'm pretty hard on it on the street. I'm going away to college in a year and I'm trying to get my car quick yet reliable before I go. I was talking to a few friends and they told me to not even bother with the gears and just get a new rear. What do you guys think? Should I get the gears or but the money towards a new rear end.

Re: Gears or save for a Rear?

id get rear.... i snapped my driver side axle with stock power(had spec 3 clutch though), and the 4.10s (from what i hear) will weaken the stocker rear as it is...

tough call, bc they arnt cheap, but strange 12 bolt is amazing, even keep traction control

A good clutch and sticky tires can make a quick death for your rear, I would definitely listen to your friends and save your dough for a whole new assembly. Check out the supporting vendors on this site, just a couple of weeks ago, one of them had a sale for 250.00 off complete Strange rearends.

Re: Gears or save for a Rear?

rear, i did the gear swap ta girdle and everything on my 10 bolt spent 700-800$ including labor, and it ended up breaking on me, so i spent all that $ and still had to buy a 12 bolt, if i were to do it again i would go straight for the 12 bolt and save all the wasted $ on the 10 bolt.

NEW REAR!! Im with these guys. I messed up my rear once and got new gears. I wasted $600 bc 2thousand miles later it busted at the track. Now i just spent 2000 on a 9inch. Spend the extra money and get a new rear end.

Re: Gears or save for a Rear?

I had my differential replaced once by a shop and then did a gear/diff swap myself.

I had around $1000 in doing this.

Turned around and spent $1800 on a all out Moser 12 bolt...

Might as well took that $1000 (I did get $200 for it though when I sold it), so let's say $800 and put gasoline on it and burned it.

Yeah I figure I'll get a 12 bolt because I can always sell it for a decent price if I ever sell the car. It's sort of like an investment, I won't be losing out on too much money buying one.
