Gears, cost/HP/installation

How much do gears cost??? Look at sig... Are they hard to install? What am I looking in HP? What kind of supporting parts do I need? I dont want to mess anything else up...

Thanks

get a 3000 stall and some 4.10 gears. Richmond gears run around $200 and install kit is around $150 labor is up to the person putting them in. The stall will help alot I like the vig. 3000 for a close to stock motor.

I currently have 2.73's do I really want to go to 4.10's? What is a 3000 stall? How much HP will I be gaining?

Thanks!

You don't gain any HP with gears. All they do is make it easier to use the HP that you already have.

What Rex said. Gears increase you're mechanical advantage. Think of higher ratio gears as using longer lever to move a bolder.

Cost? Look at summit or one of the sponsors. Cost to install? Call a shop. Ease of install? Call a shop. It is VERY easy to not do it 100% right and they will wear wrong very quickly and you'll be stuck with noisy gears at the minimum. Motive gears are usually quieter than Auburn, and IMO 4.10 is overkill unless you have a track car.

4.10s on a 3000 stall? what's your highway cruising like? i have 3.23s on a 3K stall and its all good. 4.10s seems like it may be too much on the highway. how high are you rpms while crusing at like 65? i am going 3.73 when i get my 12 bolt but im interested on what 4.10s are like.

At 65mph I'm just over 2500 and at 70mph I'm about at 3000. I went from 2.73 to 4.10s I was very happy.

Blah, nitrous is cheater spray on the street, its strip material only. The gears will not increase HP but will make you VERY happy with the performance they give you. If you want to keep a solid Daily Driver, go with 3.73's...I LOVE mine and several others will tell you the same. If you want a stall. Go 2800 or 3000 Yank and you wont look back. IF the vehicle is going to be a drag strip/ weekends only thing, go with 4.10's for that little extra boost. its all in preference to what you want....either way, 3.73 or 4.10 from what you have now will be a night and day difference....even with your stock stall! You cant go wrong here. You'll need to get the PCM tuned for a different gear ratio to correct shift points and speedometer reading.

*EDIT*
BTW, i recommend a nice shift kit because at WOT the new gears will be hard on the trans. You dont want nor do you need any delay's during shifting. Thats what killed my A4

I bet the local filling stations are happy too. At 3000 RPM I'm running around 85 mph. Gotta love an M6 for that. I ran 4.11's in my 70 w/a TH350 and a 10" converter for 11 years. Unless you can hook, its overkill.

I'd advise looking at the gear/RMP calculator and deciding from there what you're willing to live with. I don't have the link at work or I'd post it.

I thought steep gears on a daily driven automatic car and a 10" converter were worth it when I was younger, but not so much now.

mcalus, here is the rpm calculator:
