gears

what gears would be good for an auto 97 formula???? i don't want gas mileage to suffer a ton, but i want a good change. 4.10's sound good? how much would it be to have them professoinally installed?

Re: gears

Auto's for the most part need 3.73's, if you don't want gas milage to suffer I'd for sure stay away from the 4.10's since they are used more in the M6 cars.

Re: gears

I would use GM or Motive gears, as far as how much for the install I'm really not sure. Just depends on the shop. Maybe someone else could put a close figure on that for ya.

Re: gears

Locally in PA most shops gets from $250-350 to set up a rear...Thats just the labor. Gears should be around $170ish and you should get an install kit for about $100 which includes all new bearings, seals, ring gear bolts, and marking compound. Now for the "while we're in here" stuff...depending on the mileage of car you may want to look at a new posi unit, wheel bearings, and depending on the grooves in the axles worn by the bearings...new axles or offset axle bearings which move the axle bearings over slightly to wear the axles in a different spot...Seems like a lot to consider, but most shops won't charge a dime more in labor because they already have to take everything apart for the gear swap.

It would stink to have new gears installed only to have posi fail a week later. I learned a long time ago that its WAY better to bite the bullet once and have no worries...There are several places which sell everything in one kit...Good luck...
