Gears for 18" wheels??

I will be upgrading wheels and going to a 12 bolt MOSER rear in July.

I have the stock 16" wheels now. I was planning on going to 383's but w/ a bigger wheel it might not do anything at all. It'd be like having the stock gears and 16" wheels, right??

Do they make a 393? I'm not sure if I want 411's. I won't have a first gear. Any quiet gear recomends?

I've got the M6 w/ 343's...--I've been told..

The diameter of the tire is what counts, not the wheel diameter. What tires are you planning on?

Not sure about the tire size itself. does 245/40's sound right??

yes for a 245 width tire, a profile of 40 will yield the 25.7" tire diameter that is equal to stock.

for a 275 width tire, you need to drop down to a 35 series profile, which will yield a 25.6" diameter

call up TR or one of the sponsors who sell the 12bolt and ask about gears

You should consider getting a wider rim/tire combo.. like some 315's... to help hook..

Wider?? A buddy of mine said that he tried the 10" wide Zo6 wheels on his 99 Z28 and they were too wide...

Wider tire? I'm not to fond of the baloon look

There are far too many people running 315's on 11" wide wheels here, with no problems, and without the "baloon" look. A set of 315 DR's will hook like no other.

remember that wider doesn't automatically equal more traction...

rubber compound has more to do with it than anything.

if i wanted max traction with minimal expense, i would be looking at a set of drag radials or slicks that mount to the stock 16" rims. more sidewall allows for more flex when you launch, which helps with traction. think of all those pics of guys launching and you see the wrinkles in the tires.

Wrinkle wall slicks too... But I'm not running enough power nor do I have the rear to need them...

Re: Gears for 18" wheels??

The guys into open track days and roadracing really love their 315 17x11 tire setup on all 4 corners.. Yes, even up front. Some of them even run this combo as a daily driver. Although, I wonder what their tolerance is for wandering/rutt following? Combined with extra tire, and aggressive rubber, grip and respons is supposidly insane... Once I get my brakes and safety stuff setup the way I like, I hope to make the next jump with suspension and wheel setup for the 17x11 for opentrack days..

The trick is to get the right offset.. From what I read, 50 mm offset with different spacers up front and back and massaging of he inner wheelwell. little to no fender mods needed..... or 36 mm offset with no spacers, but Camaro's may need their fenders flared, some Firebirds may not.. In the rear, you'll probably want an adjustable panhard bar to make sure the rear is perfectly centered since clearance will be tight. If you do a search, there is plenty of talk about this..

For AutoX, it would probably be really hard to get that much tire heated up enough to be totally effective..

But yea, the combo is not optimal for drag racing.. I bet a 15" rim out back with a 28" tall tire, with the right width figured would look and hok real nice.. and have skinny's up front..

We now have a post in the FAQ section of the "Wheels and Tires" forum, addressing the 17x11" wheels.
