Question Gear wine

I put a set of Motives 3:73 gears in my '95 camaro and the gears wine at 35 - 65 and 75 - up mph
Motive is offering to replace the gears put I have to pay to get them installed as the shop that put them in said the wine is not because of the way they set them up . I checked the back lash and it is at .09 and Motive gears recomends .08-.10
Do you guys think i am just wasting money and just live with the noise or get another shop to install ( Hard to find a good rearend shop )

Re: Gear wine

"Gear wine" do you get a buzz off that because my car has some gear whine and all it does is give me a headache.

Re: Gear wine

I contacted Motive when my gears whined the Tech said that its a normal thing and not to worry, he said they get some that do and some that dont but he told me nothing to worry about. DId they say it was bad gears if the whine? I just want to know just in case that guy was blowing me off.

Re: Gear wine

The guy I talked to said to check backlash , pinion depth , and bearings and all were good so he said if I wanted to try a new set they would send me a set but could not help with the cost of install

Re: Gear wine

the wine is normal i have richmond gears in my o1 ss. the wine comes from the way the teeth are cut. They are built for strength. Supposedly if you go with gm gears that will cure the wine problem.

Re: Gear wine

It's very unlikely that "poor setup" has caused the whine. I say it's more to do with the gears themselves. I had a really bad set of Richmond 3.73's last year (which I was credited back for). I now have Richmond 4.10's, and they're very quiet. There is a small amount of gear noise at initial acceleration, or at various speeds just "coasting", but it's nothing in comparison to the 3.73's I had. A friend of mine also has Richmond 3.73's in his '95, and they whine a little bit as well, but it's more tolerable. If it is excessive though, it's definitely a problem with the gears. It doesn't mean they're "bad" and are going to break, it just means that they're a noisier cut, for whatever reason. If you don't like the noise and you're confident the setup is at least "close" to spec, ask for a new set of gears.
