Gear Vendors Gear splitter

I currently have a T56 in my car, I know that a th400 is cheaper and stronger than the tranny I have now... I am considering doing a gear split, heavy duty built th400 in my car so i can still have decent gas miliage, in essence a 6 spd auto...

... pros??? cons??? Thanks people.

Pros: more gears. Cons: cost and a bit of weight.

Injuneer is running one. You might want to talk to him.

It'd be great to post here with the responses. I'm sure there are a few people (including myself) that would be interested in a first hand experience with that product.

As Rich said, its heavy - I'd guess is added maybe 40#, and needed yet another custom driveshaft - same yoke as the TH-400, but a lot shorter shaft length.

I minimized the cost by picking it up for 1/2 of original cost, with very low miles. I did not intall the electronic controls, which would probably be needed to "split" all three gears. I just wanted it for an O/D, since almost 4,000RPM at 70MPH was a bit intense. Have it set up with two switches, a rocker to switch it on for highway cruising, and a pushbutton on the shifter handle to use it as a 4th gear at the track.

The original owner was pushing about 1,000HP through it, and only removed it to get the weight of his 97 SS convertible down from its bulky 3,950#. He used it as a 4th gear as well, and it held up fine. I haven't had my car to the track in more than 2 years, so I've never tried the O/D with the 300-shot. It did work fine when I tested it with a 125-shot, but I really didn't even need a 4th gear with the small shot.

I thought it would have been much more heavy than that. 40# isn't too bad also considering that the weight is at least in a good area (from a handling perspective).
