gear install in middle georgia
gear install in middle georgia
So I bought a GU2 Trans am this week. I didn't even look before I bought it but thought it felt a little sluggish driving it around this week. Checked the sticker and sure enough.....damn 2.73's. I went through a doityourself gear install in my mustang and don't really want to tackle that again in my daily driver. I'm going with 3.73's and want all the bearings replaced along with a limited slip rebuild. Couple of questions.
What else exactly am I going to need to make this work. Do I still have to get a different carrier to go to 3.73's? What gears have you guys been using? What do I do about a tune for the trans and speedo? I don't have anything else done to the car but the modding is beginning and will probably do long tubes next. Should I wait and get a tune after the long tubes and gears?
Any good shops you recommend in the central georgia area to do the install?

Re: gear install in middle georgia
You can buy 3.73 gears to fit a 2-series carrier (which is what you have, given 2.73's) and pretty much any brand makes them: Richmond, Motive, Strange. Richmond's seem to be the most notorious for whining 3.73's, but again, it's a case by case thing ... mine did, many don't. Whichever brand you choose, keep in mind, it's still just the little 7-5/8" 10-bolt!
As far as getting a LSD "rebuild", if you have the Torsen diff (I think Torsens came in the later model LS1's, whereas most LT1's used the Auburn?
) then there's nothing really to re-build?
And I'm not even sure if there's much that can be done to refurbish an Auburn after it's worn out??
Replacing the bearings is certainly a good idea while you're in there, and getting a shop to do the job will save you ~3 to 4 hours at least of messing around on your back, fighting with gears (to get them in, and get them set right) and if they make noise afterwards, you should have some recourse with a shop, instead of answering to yourself
. I've become as "seasoned pro" (had my 10-bolt apart at least ~6 times
) so I'm not afraid doing it myself
.
.............but just for the record, I haven't had to take the diff apart to correct any mistakes!
It's almost always been voluntary (gear changes) except recently when the 4.10's broke, and I had to do something about that!

Re: gear install in middle georgia
Sweet, can anybody verify that a 00 non WS6 TA has a torsen diff? I just remember my 96 Z28 having the POS auburn that I was rebuilding every 40K miles.
I wouldn't be doing it on my back as I am a tech at a BMW dealer and could more than likely handle the install myself, I'd just rather pay somebody who does it everyday to do it. I did 4.10's in my mustang last year successfully, but it wasn't much fun.....even on a lift.
I hate to throw a grand at the 10 bolt, but I can't deal with the 2.73's and don't have enough mods or cash right now to warrant a super 60.
Any good F-body specific shops in the middle Georgia area that can handle the gears and correct the speedo and tranny all in one stop? There's a million mustang shops around here.
