Confused about 4th gear....

My brother was out of town (OTR trucker) and asked me to take his '99 SS out for a wash and fill up the tank for him while he was gone, so I did. But while I was driving it, I noticed that everytime I tried shifting into 4th, the shifter would pop out of gear when I let out the clutch after completing the shift. Most of the time when that happened, it would grind, which is obviously embarrassing. I learned to drive stick in his car, and have had my Cobalt SS for almost a year (stick also), so it's not like I don't know how to drive it. To make it even MORE confusing, it wouldn't pop out of gear if I pushed in the clutch pedal ALL the way in.

So my question is simple: What's the matter with the car? I don't exactly want to be the bearer of bad news for my brother, who's cherished the car for the 7 years he's owned it. Even worse if it somehow WAS my fault.

Sounds like the syncho for 4th might be going out. Good news is it's probably not your fault, and has more than likely been doing this for a while. If your brother drives the car every day, he probably doesn't know it pops out of gear. I didn't know my '98 pops out of 4th until a friend drove it and told me. you get used to driving it and making it stay in gear and don't notice after a while.

I gave up on this thread when I made my last post, so sorry for not noticing your post for 2 weeks.

I rode with my brother in it as he drove and watched what happened when time for him to shift to 4th, and he had no problem with it. I guess he had gotten used to it, so I just never mentioned it to him. I just found the whole thing odd since the car barely has over 30,000 miles.

Thanks for the response!
