Freak T56 Failure/Problem??

A little background. 1996 Impala SS with a stock motor and 4.10 rear end. Bought a used T56 with 60K miles. Drove it for a year before finally tearing into it to rebuild and replace the 3rd gear shift fork and freshen up the bearings and give it a once over. I had a friend who builds transmissions do this for me and watched it every step of the way. Well, I had less than 1200 miles on it and went to back up leaving work, and nothing. The transmission would not physically go into reverse. No grinding, no spring'in... nothing. Did not matter if the engine was on or off, clutch was in or out, it would just NEVER get into the reverse gate.

So I finally pulled it this weekend. Took off the tail housing and voila.... chunks of magnet. Apparently the magnet that gets trapped between the rear housing and the body housing broke in 2. It then decided to move around in the case and get munged in the gears and seems to have made a terrible black mess over everything. Of the gears I have seen nothing looks damaged. Just needs to be dissembled and cleaned. It was stuck between the reverse and a gear so the shift fork could not budge. That was my problem. Anybody else ever see anything like this. Anything I should do to aid in the cleanup?

Thanks,
TOM B
