Re: ford 9 inch

The mechanical power losses published in a tech article in National Dragster:

Dana 60 - 5%
GM 12-bolt - 7%
Ford 9-inch - 10%

I believe the 9-inch is heavier than the 12-bolt.

The 9-inch offsets the pinion shaft to one side, and lowers it 3/4" compared to the 12-bolt, making drivesahft alignment more problematic, but not unsolvable. It requires a torque arm with a set of offset mounting holes. You will probably need to beat in the DS tunnel to clear the top of the rear TA mount. You will probably need a new DS.

I don't think they offer 3-channel ABS on the 9-inch.

You can't get a posi above 31-spline axles, so you have to go to a locker or a spool. The 31-spline posi is an Auburn unit. With a 12-bolt, you can go to 33-spline axles with a HP Eaton.

The 9-inch allows you to swap center-sections for quick gear changes (slowed a bit on a 3rd or 4th Gen because of the TA mount)

There are more options available to appreciably strengthen the 9-inch for applications over 1000HP.

The 9-inch offers a wider selection of gear ratios.

For 700HP, the 12-bolt will be OK, unless you spend every weekend at the track and make numerous runs with 6K clutch dumps on super-sticky tires. You will definitely need a new driveshaft.... Spohn HD, Dennys "nitrous ready", Mark Williams 3" chrome moly.

The stock clutch will not stand up to that kind of HP, and the 4L60E will need a major (near-miraculous) rebuild to stand up to it. The T56 will take it, but you might want to upgrade some of the internals and the input shaft.

No. The stock rear on all 4th Gen F-bodys, including your 96 Z28 is a very flimsy 7.5" 10-bolt. I mentioned the 12-bolt because its a viable alternative to the 9-inch in some applications.
