Fluid level - 4L60E, Vigilante, Lokar

After degreeing a cam, checking pushrod length, etc., I should be ashamed of this question.

I can't for the life of me tell the fluid level on my freshly rebuilt 4L60e with a Vigilante torque converter. I installed one of the Lokar dipsticks (for valve cover clearance reasons), and every time I check it, it's just smeared with fluid - can't get a good reading. I currently have about 1 quart less than the stock capacity to allow for the smaller TC.

I don't know where to go from here. I'm afraid to drive it for fear of too high or too low of a level, and have a 3 year old brand new engine that still needs to be broken in now that the tranny is fixed. Does anyone happen to have the same setup that they could tell me the fluid level without the engine running?
