First gear jammed in an 4L60E
Hello, I tried to search previous posts about the problem but no luck. The problem is that when I put the transmission on D it starts on second and goes through all the gears normally but first gear never goes on. When I put it on 1st manually it feels like the parking brake is on. If I give it some throttle it tries to go forward but feels like the brake is on strong. Kind of like when doing a burn out. I haven't been able to lift the car up yet and the only thing that happened just before this started was the serpentine belt went of big time. Pieces everywhere. I managed to drive the car home for a couple of blocks and after putting the new belt on this started. Anybody have any educated ideas? The car is a 1995 Z28 Conv. with 4L60E +3.73:1 gears. (Originally 2.73:1) Thanks

Pulled the codes with datamaster. No codes, according to the pcm everything is OK. The voltage fluctuates and sometimes goes below 11 but this has been going on a long time before the tranny problem started. I did have the battery disconnected for a while as well and no help. I wonder if anyone else has had similar problems fith 1st gear? I just tried it and manually it goes on but the car doesn't want to move. On D it just uses 2-3-4.

This might sound stupid but is it possible that reverse and first gear might be on at the same time? I'm trying to figure out these symptoms as they are really wierd. Did some of these cars have a winter mode where the car starts on second gear? Maybe the computer is screwed and this mode is on even thought there is no switch for it? I'm on a wild goose chase here... As I wrote earlier, no codes.

when you used datamaster did you switch to the trans codes and data selection or did you just get the engine codes,, there is 2 different places to get codes with datamaster, engine and transmission

If the trans locks down like the brake is on in manual fist then either the band or 3-4 clutch is always on, Now the voltage fluctuations could be the underlying cause if theres been a transgo hd2 installed at some time and theres not enough voltage to turn on the 1-2 (A) shift solenoid the you could end up with the band applied due to this (2nd gear start) and in manual low the low/reverse clutch set be on and you would get the bind up issue you speak of. I would solve the voltage issue as it is critical for the proper operation of the trans in multiple ways and then go from there.
