External Fan Cooler Only

I have read some of the main people like cpt saying its a no no. I was wondering if anyone has put a external cooler only on there street car with a fan? Insight and trans temps and everything? The cooler I have is a 4490 Trans Cool Stacked Plate. Want to hear from people with street cars with a external only trans cooler with a fan.

I put a TH400 in my car, which used to be an M6, with no tranny cooler in the radiator. I installed a Perma-Cool fan-assisted cooler, and have had no problems. That's with a high stall, non-locking converter, handling 800 lb-ft on the spray.

Are you asking about mounting it in a different location than in front of the radiator? The fans for the radiator are plenty for keeping everything cool. Whats your reason for needing an extra fan, or mounting in a different location if thats the reason?

I have a fairly large cooler that is in series with the stock cooler and in front of the radiator. I don't have temps, though. The fans blow enough air for me, though.

i had the large b&m cooler with the 9.5" fan and built in thermo switch(160*f) and -6 lines mounted up in the right front fender horizontally with just a few slots cut in the lower plastic shield and my 4l60e with a 10" converter hardly ever got to 160*f, street driving always around 130*f. straight from the trans to the cooler, no radiator

I want to mount the cooler infront of the rad bypassing the radiator cooler. With a small electrical fan.

Cars, trucks & heavy towing, GVW rating 22,000 lbs.
Low pressure drop cooler , 12 x 11 x 3/4, 60 cooling plates

If Fred made it work, so can you. The internal cooler just keeps the temp in check in my opinion. Why would you want to run trans fluid through a 160-200+ degree radiator? I want my trans COOLER than that for sure.

I have the 4490 Tru-Cool cooler. Mounted in front of the radiator (but with a small space). Stock radiator fans pull air through it. Radiator is bypassed.

Last summer during 96°F 65% humidity outdoor temps, in stop and go traffic (mostly stop), with the A/C on blowing 30°F air in the car (tons of heat going to the condenser), I had my radiator at 230°F in traffic, 245°F after stopping for gas (car off). Transmission cooler was at 188°.

I'm running the stock converter, but it seems to me that the 4490 doesn't need a fan unless you're not putting it in front of the radiator.

Seems like all the ls1 guys bypass it with big stalls 4400s. Sounds like i can save a few bucks on a new radiator now.
