Eaton Posi Units

Mine is slipping and i've already changed the gear lube and additive lube for the posi unit. So my next step is replacing or rebuilding. I would rather rebuild it for financial purposes, but i'm not sure if they can be rebuilt???? If they can then what are the pros and cons? Thanks

They can be rebuilt...lots of places sell the kits to do the rebuilds...I think Randys Ring and Pinion sells the rebuild kits...I'm sure others do as well...

Re: Eaton Posi Units

G80 is GM's RPO code for a limited slip. If your rear is original it's more than likely an Auburn, rebuildable only by Auburn, and only if it's less than 5 yrs. old.

Re: Eaton Posi Units

So even though I've got the G80 code, I could still have an Auburn?

Also which size rear end is under our cars? 8.5 or 8.6xx ?
Thanks again

Stock rear is 7.625" 10-bolt not 8.5" 10-bolt.

Auburn was GM's limited slip of choice till '98 I believe, although one could get a Zexel when going thru SLP.

Like Jason said our rears are 7.625/7.5. I think the use of 7.5 is a carry over from when the 3rd Gen had the Australian rear, which actually was 7.5".

Re: Eaton Posi Units

So i positively have an Auburn? The G80 code isn't brand specific to Eaton it's just the general code for a limited slip unit?

Re: Eaton Posi Units

To the best of my knowledge you have an Auburn.

I was wrong about the ring gear size on the Borg Warner Australian rear, it was 7.750.

Re: Eaton Posi Units

I emailed Eaton to see if the G80 code applied to our cars and it DOES. If you have a G80 code in your car then you have an Eaton unit. It is the " Eaton
M-Locker". This code also applies to the GM line of trucks.

Re: Eaton Posi Units

I too have a '95 and a G80 code and replaced my posi carrier with an Eaton when I went to a different gear ratio. The one I took out was an Auburn. I have had my car since new, so that's not a factor.

Good luck with your rebuild.

Re: Eaton Posi Units

I guess the only way that we will know is when I crack open the rear end for the swap. I'm going to prepare for a rebuild on the Eaton and if I happens to be an Auburn I'll deal with it then. Thanks for all the help and i'll let you know what I find.
